Dr. Koehnemann's family has been in Titusville for five generations, and her path to eye care began in this office. In 2002, as a high school student, she followed Dr. Aker from room to room. Ten years later she came back as a doctor, and before that first year was out she had started our Low Vision Clinic.
Her training went where the hardest eye problems are. After optometry school she completed an externship in ocular disease at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, then a residency at the SUNY State College of Optometry in New York City in primary eye care, ocular disease, and low vision. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry.
The Low Vision Clinic is for anyone whose glasses no longer do enough, often because of macular degeneration or another retinal disease. She starts each visit with one job you want back, reading the mail, a face across the table, a price tag at the store, and works through magnifiers, lighting, and lenses to find what helps you do it. The visit runs about 90 minutes, all of it with her, and no dilating drops.
Eight members of her own family have retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited retinal disease, so she has watched vision loss from the kitchen table as well as the exam chair. She has worked with the Foundation Fighting Blindness since 2007, and she works closely with the Division of Blind Services and the Brevard Association for the Advancement of the Blind to connect her patients with help beyond our office.
Every year she leads Team Aker Eye in the Foundation Fighting Blindness VisionWalk, raising money for research into the retinal diseases she sees in the clinic and in her own family.

Three ways to get a time
Mon to Fri, 8am to 5pm, both offices. We open at 10am on the first and third Wednesday of the month.
Dr. Sarah Koehnemann. She is residency trained in low vision and ocular disease, a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, and she started our Low Vision Clinic in 2012 and has run it since. She sees patients at our Playalinda office, 1114 S Washington Ave, all on one floor. Call us at (321) 269-2021 and we will set up a low vision evaluation.
It runs differently from a regular eye exam. Dr. Koehnemann starts with the task that has gotten hard, reading, the computer, the oven dials, and tries magnifiers, telescopes, lighting, and glare control against it to see what helps. Medical insurance usually covers the evaluation. Any device you take home is paid for separately, about the cost of a pair of glasses.
