Low vision
Dr. Sarah Koehnemann runs the Low Vision Clinic at Aker Eye Vision Source. It is at our Playalinda office, 1114 S Washington Ave in Titusville. She started the clinic in 2012. A low vision evaluation takes about 90 minutes, and all of it is with her. It is built around the tasks you want back, like reading or seeing faces. The building is on one floor, with no stairs. Question 1
A low vision specialist is an eye doctor with extra training in low vision. Low vision means an eye disease or injury makes daily tasks hard, even with your best glasses. Dr. Koehnemann did her residency in primary care. It had a special interest in low vision and ocular disease.

She helps you use the sight you have. She starts with one task you miss. Then she tries tools against that task until one works. The tools may be magnifiers, telescopes, electronic devices, better lighting, or sunglasses that cut glare. You try them at the visit, and you choose what goes home. That is the work of our Low Vision Clinic.
Question 3
You tell Dr. Koehnemann what has gotten hard. It might be the newspaper, your phone, the TV, or price tags. It might be menus, pill bottles, oven dials, or faces. Then you work on those goals together.
Plan on about 90 minutes, sometimes longer. All of it is face to face with her. There are no dilating drops. Once you book a low vision evaluation, we mail you a welcome packet and the new patient forms.

Usually not. The eye disease limits what any lens in a frame can do. That is why the last new pair may not have helped. A low vision device adds the size or the contrast that glasses cannot. Each one is matched to one task.
Not everyone needs new glasses. If a new prescription would help, Dr. Koehnemann works it out at the low vision visit.
Question 5
The evaluation is billed to your medical insurance, and that includes Medicare. A specialist copay may apply. If a new prescription would help, there is a $50 fee to work it out.
The devices are generally not covered. Many cost about what a pair of glasses does. You decide before you buy. Call us with your plan name, and we will check your insurance first.
Question 6
There may be. Dr. Koehnemann works closely with the Division of Blind Services. It may help eligible patients pay for the evaluation and the devices. She also works with the Brevard Association for the Advancement of the Blind. If there is help beyond our office, she knows where to send you. Ask about it when you book at our Playalinda office.
Question 7
Bring every pair of glasses you wear. Bring the sunglasses and magnifiers that help you. Bring your phone, tablet, or e-reader. And bring a few things that are hard to see, like a book, a bill, sheet music, or a pill bottle.
Those let Dr. Koehnemann test your sight on the things that matter to you. At our Low Vision Clinic, that is where we start.

Yes, to both. A son, daughter, or friend can call (321) 269-2021 or text us to book. You can come alone, or bring someone with you. Both are fine. If you see Dr. Greg Aker or Dr. Amanda Aker Downtown, they can send you to Playalinda for the evaluation. You can book online too.
