Which specialty contact lenses do we fit?

Scleral lenses, gas permeable lenses, custom soft lenses, and hybrid lenses, at both of our Titusville offices. Which one suits you depends on the shape of your cornea, your prescription, and how your eyes feel at the end of the day. We walk you through the choice first, and nothing gets ordered until you understand it.

The lens types we work with:

  • Scleral lenses: a larger gas permeable lens that arches over the cornea and rests on the white of the eye. The space underneath holds a layer of saline, so the lens gives an irregular cornea a smooth new surface and keeps it moist through the day. Common reasons to fit one are keratoconus, corneal scars, and eyes changed by surgery.
  • Gas permeable lenses, or gas perms: a small, firm lens that holds its shape on the eye, so it corrects astigmatism and irregular corneas that a soft lens cannot. They take a little time to get used to, and the vision through them is sharp.
  • Custom soft lenses: a soft lens made to your measurements when your prescription or eye shape is off the standard chart, including high astigmatism, very strong prescriptions, and multifocal needs.
  • Hybrid lenses (SynergEyes): a gas permeable center for crisp vision with a soft outer skirt for comfort. A middle ground for patients who want the clarity of a gas perm and the feel of a soft lens.

What happens at a specialty contact lens fitting?

A specialty fitting starts with a full look at your eyes and a set of measurements of your cornea, then trial lenses on the eye until we find the shape that sits right. It is more involved than a regular contact lens exam, and it usually takes more than one visit, because a lens made to your eye deserves a second look once you have worn it. You leave each visit knowing what we found and what comes next.

When your lenses arrive, we check the fit on your eye and teach you to put them in, take them out, and clean them. A scleral lens goes in with a small plunger and a little preservative-free saline, and it gets easier with practice. After you have worn the lenses a while, we see you again and adjust them if they need it.

Who fits specialty contact lenses at Aker Eye, and where?

All four of our doctors, at both of our Titusville offices. Contact lenses and ocular disease were Dr. Greg Aker's focus in optometry school, and he has since co-managed more than 2,000 LASIK surgeries, so an eye changed by surgery is familiar ground to him. How much do specialty contact lenses cost, and does insurance help?

Specialty lenses cost more than standard contacts, and the fitting is billed separately from a regular exam, because it takes more measurements and more visits. The price depends on the lens type and on how many visits your fit needs, and we go over it with you before we order. Some vision plans and some medical plans help with specialty lenses when they are medically necessary, and every plan has its own rules. What are scleral contact lenses?

A scleral lens is a large gas permeable lens that arches over the cornea and rests on the sclera, the white of the eye. The gap under the lens is filled with saline, which gives an irregular cornea a smooth surface to see through and keeps the eye moist. We fit them at both of our Titusville offices.

Can scleral lenses help keratoconus?

Often, yes. Keratoconus thins and steepens the cornea into a shape that glasses and soft lenses cannot fully correct. A scleral lens vaults over that shape and replaces it with a smooth surface, which is why it is a common lens for keratoconus. We measure your cornea at the fitting and tell you straight whether a scleral lens or a gas perm is the better fit for your eyes.

How much do scleral contact lenses cost?

More than standard contacts, because each lens is made to your measurements and the fitting takes more than one visit. The price depends on the lens and on how many visits your fit needs. We quote it before we order, and we look at your plan first, so you know what it pays and what you pay.

Does insurance or Medicare cover scleral lenses?

It depends on the plan and on the reason for the lens. Some vision plans have a medically necessary contact lens benefit for keratoconus and irregular corneas, some medical plans help, and Medicare has its own rules. Give us your plan name when you call (321) 269-2021 and we will look up your coverage before you come in.

Can you sleep in scleral lenses?

No. Take them out every night. A scleral lens worn overnight cuts the oxygen reaching the cornea and raises the risk of infection, so we ask every patient to remove, clean, and store them each evening. We show you how at your fitting visit, and we practice together until you are comfortable with it.

How long do scleral lenses last?

With good care, usually about a year, sometimes longer. Your eye can change even when the lens does not, especially with keratoconus, so we check the fit at your yearly visit and set a replacement schedule for your lens. Bring the lenses and your case to every visit so we can look at both.

How do I put in and clean scleral lenses?

To put one in, fill the bowl of the lens with preservative-free saline, hold it on a small plunger, lean your face down over a mirror, and set it on the eye. To take it out, a plunger on the edge of the lens lifts it off. Clean and store them each night with the solutions we recommend. We teach all of it at your fitting visit.
