What is it like to buy glasses at Aker Eye?

Buying glasses with us starts right after your exam, or on a day of your own choosing once you have a current prescription. Someone from our optical shop sits with you, looks at your prescription and your face, and pulls frames that fit both. Then we choose the lenses together, measure how the frame sits on you, and order the pair.

At Downtown the exam rooms are upstairs and the optical shop is on the ground floor, so you ride the elevator down and the frames are waiting. Playalinda has its own optical on the same floor as the exam rooms. Both shops carry frames for men, women, and children, along with sport and safety frames.

What we do before we order:

• Pull frames for your prescription and your face, instead of pointing you at the whole wall
• Measure your pupillary distance and where your eyes sit in the frame, so the lenses line up
• Explain each lens option, with its price, before you say yes
• Apply your benefits and quote the balance, so the number on the receipt is the number you heard

What lens options are there, and which do I need?

The lens is where most of the value in a pair of glasses lives, and the right one depends on how you use your eyes. Single vision lenses fix distance or reading. Progressives put distance, computer, and reading in one lens with no line. Beyond that, the choices are coatings and tints that make the lens easier to live with.

Tell us what a normal day looks like, how much of it is on a screen, on the water, or behind the wheel at night, and we will match the lens to it. The extras you would never notice, we leave off.

• Progressive lenses, including Varilux, for anyone past 40 who is tired of swapping between two pairs
• Anti-glare coating such as Crizal, which cuts reflections for night driving and screens

Can I try on frames from home?

Yes. Our whole frame wall is online, close to two thousand frames from more than 80 brands, and your phone camera shows any of them on your own face before you set foot in the shop. Filter by brand, color, and optical or sun, and when one catches your eye, order it online or come in and try the real thing.

The online shop is the same inventory our shops carry, so a frame you like on the screen is one we can put in your hands. If you would rather use your benefits in person, save the frame and bring it up when you come in.

What brands of glasses do you carry?

Ray-Ban and Oakley lead the wall, followed by Costa, Tom Ford, Maui Jim, Michael Kors, Coach, Prada, Kate Spade, Tiffany, Vera Bradley, Carrera, and Tommy Hilfiger, along with value lines such as Affordable Designs and Eight to Eighty that fit and wear well for less. Children's frames, safety frames, and sport frames are on the wall too, and titanium and flexible frames for people who are hard on their glasses.

Where do I get sunglasses in Titusville?

From the sunglass wall in our optical, at either office. We carry Maui Jim, Costa, Ray-Ban, and Oakley among others, and many of them can be made in your prescription. Dr. Aker learned to surf at Playalinda Beach when he was eight and still paddles out when the waves are good, so glare off the water is something we take personally.

Polarized lenses are the ones to ask for if you fish, surf, or spend afternoons on the river. They cut the glare off the water so you can see into it. Ask for full UV protection too; the sun plays a part in cataracts, and Florida hands out plenty of it.

Does insurance cover glasses, and how do I pay?

Most vision plans give you a frame allowance and pay part of the lenses once a year or once every two years, and we apply that at the counter so the price you see is the price after benefits. We work with most vision plans and medical insurance, including VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, Superior Vision, Spectera, Avesis, Medicare, Humana, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, UMR, Golden Rule, Tricare, Health First, and Florida Health Care Plans; call to confirm yours, since plan networks change during the year. Call us at (321) 269-2021 with your plan name and we will check what is left on it before you come in.

No vision coverage? We take cash, checks, all major cards, HSA and FSA cards, and Cherry, which lets you pay for a pair over time.

What if my glasses break, or I change my mind about the frame?

Glasses get sat on, dropped, and chewed by the dog, so every frame we sell carries a one-time replacement warranty for a year from the day you buy it, unless we tell you otherwise at the counter. Bring the damaged frame back and we replace it for a $25 fee. Lenses with Crizal anti-reflective coating or our premium scratch coating are covered twice over two years, again for $25 a replacement, and we need the damaged lenses back. A few coatings carry a one-year, one-time warranty instead, so ask us which yours has.

The warranty covers defects, not lost glasses or damage from an accident or misuse, and a frame that has been glued or repaired with adhesive is no longer covered. If you get home and the frame is not the one, you have 90 days from pickup to restyle it once. Within 30 days you pay only the difference for a pricier frame; after 30 days it is the difference plus $75. An order canceled or returned more than 48 hours after it is placed carries a 25 percent restocking fee on what you paid out of pocket.
