Three Generations of Titusville Doctors
That is our family’s saying, and it is how all four of us practice. Two of us are Akers, father and daughter. One of us shadowed Dr. Aker as a high school student and came back to work beside him. One of us trained just for children’s eyes. Come meet whichever one of us you like.
Since 1958
Titusville has had an Aker looking after it since before the space program. Here is how we got from a surgeon paid in eggs to the third Dr. Aker.
1958
Dr. Charles Aker opens his practice and operates at Parrish Medical Center. His wife, Laura, is a nurse anesthetist down the hall. He takes payment in eggs, dinner plates, and once in miniature ponies.
1984
Dr. Greg Aker finishes optometry school and moves back to Titusville to look after the eyes of the people Dr. Charles Aker treated.
2002
A fifth-generation Titusville student named Sarah Koehnemann follows the doctor around the office for a school project. She never really leaves.
2004
Dr. Aker hangs his own sign on S Washington Ave, in a building that has stood there since 1888. Dr. Charles and Laura Aker's hospital portraits go up in the lobby.
2012
Dr. Koehnemann, now a doctor herself, starts a clinic for patients whose glasses no longer do enough. It runs at Playalinda today.
2016
A sunglass shop opens on the ground floor of the Downtown office, named for the beach where Dr. Aker learned to surf at eight. Today that floor is our full-service optical.
2025
Dr. Amanda Aker, who once worked the front desk here, finishes her residency and takes the exam room next to her father's.

Aker Eye Downtown
Diplomate, American Board of Optometry; Southern Diplomate in Glaucoma Management
Titusville born, the son of the town's first surgeon, and the doctor who started our practice. He has looked after his neighbors' eyes for more than 40 years, and glaucoma is his specialty.

A fifth-generation Titusville native who shadowed Dr. Aker in high school, trained in eye disease and low vision at Bascom Palmer and in New York, and came home to start our Low Vision Clinic.

When a child fails a school screening or squints at the board, she is the doctor to ask for. Her residency was in children's eyes and how the two eyes work together, and she sees their parents too.

The third generation of Akers to care for Titusville. She worked our front desk and our frame inventory through optometry school, trained in primary care and ocular disease in Chicago, and now shares the Downtown exam rooms with her father.
