Vision plan or medical insurance: which one pays for my visit?

Two cards, two jobs. Your vision plan pays for the routine exam and helps with glasses or contacts. Your medical insurance pays when something is wrong: dry eye, glaucoma, diabetes, an eye that hurts. Many of our patients carry both, and we bill the one that fits the visit.

Your vision plan

  • A routine eye exam once a year or once every two years, depending on the plan
  • An allowance toward glasses or contact lenses
  • A contact lens fitting, on some plans

Your medical insurance

  • Dry eye, red eye, and eye pain
  • Glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataract care
  • Diabetic eye exams
  • Eye emergencies, flashes, and new floaters

If a routine exam turns up something medical, we stop and say so, and we tell you which card it goes on before we go further. A dry eye visit or a diabetic eye exam is medical from the start.

How do you check my benefits before my visit?

It starts the day you book and it is finished before you park.

  1. 1Give us the plan name and member ID from your card when you book, or read it to us over the phone.
  2. 2We look up what your plan covers for the visit you are having, and what it does not.
  3. 3By the time you park, you know your copay and whether glasses or contacts come with an allowance.

How can I pay for what my plan does not cover?

A copay, a second pair of glasses, a treatment your plan sits out: cash, check, the major cards, and HSA or FSA cards all work. Cherry is financing for a larger purchase, such as glasses or a course of treatment, and we can set it up with you at the desk.

Who accepts VSP vision insurance in Titusville?

Plan networks change, so call us with your member ID and we will confirm your VSP benefits before you book. Then bring your card to the visit and we bill the plan for you.

Does Medicare cover an eye exam?

Medicare usually covers an eye visit for a medical reason, such as a diabetic eye exam, glaucoma care, or a new eye problem, and usually does not cover a routine exam for glasses. Some Medicare Advantage plans add a routine exam or a glasses benefit. Bring your card and we will check what your plan covers before your visit.

Which plan do I use for a dry eye or glaucoma visit?

Your medical insurance, because dry eye and glaucoma are medical conditions rather than a glasses prescription. A vision plan covers the routine exam and puts an allowance toward glasses or contacts. If you have both, bring both cards and we bill the right one for the visit you are having. Should a routine exam turn up a medical problem, we say which plan applies before doing anything more.

Can I come in without vision insurance?

Yes, and plenty of our patients do. We tell you the cost of the exam and anything else before we do it. We take cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, HSA and FSA cards, and Cherry financing for a larger purchase such as glasses. Call (321) 269-2021 and we will walk you through it.

What should I bring so my insurance goes through?

Your insurance card, or a photo of the front and back. If you have a vision plan and a medical plan, bring both. Add your current glasses or contact lens boxes and a list of the medicines you take, and we have everything we need to bill your plan and get your exam started on time.
