Contacts have changed a lot. Plenty of people who were told years ago that contacts were not for them wear them now without a second thought. If the right answer for you is a different lens, a daily lens, or a break from lenses while we treat something else, we will say so.

What is the difference between an eye exam and a contact lens exam?

A contact lens exam is a comprehensive eye exam plus a fitting. The fitting adds measurements of the curve and size of your cornea and a check of how a lens actually sits on your eye. A glasses prescription alone is not enough, because a contact lens rests on the eye and has to match its shape as well as its power.

At the fitting we measure your cornea, look at the surface of your eye and your tear film under the slit lamp, and talk about your day: screens, sports, the beach, how many hours you want to wear them. Then a trial lens goes on. We check it under the microscope for centering and movement, measure your vision through it, and if it is not right, we try another. That care is the difference between a lens you tolerate and one you forget you are wearing.

What the fitting adds to your exam:

• Measurements of the curve and size of your cornea, so the lens sits where it should
• A look at your tear film and the surface of your eye, because dry eyes need a different lens
• A trial lens on your eye, checked under the slit lamp for fit, movement, and comfort
• Your vision measured through the lens itself, not just through the exam lenses
• Insertion and removal practice, and a care routine written for the lens you chose

What kinds of contact lenses can I get?

Soft lenses are what most people wear, and for many patients the first lens we reach for is a daily disposable: a fresh lens every morning, no case, no solution, nothing to clean. We also fit two-week and monthly soft lenses, toric lenses for astigmatism, gas permeable lenses, and colored lenses. The brands we fit include Dailies Total1, Biofinity, Proclear, and PureMoist.

Two-week and monthly lenses cost less per day and need a case and solution. Gas permeable lenses, the small firm ones, give very crisp vision and last a long time with good care. Lenses approved for overnight wear exist, but we fit them only for patients whose eyes handle them well, and we tell you honestly if yours do not. Colored lenses are still prescription lenses and get the same fitting as any other.

Keratoconus, a very high prescription, an irregular cornea, or a history of being hard to fit calls for a specialty contact lens fitting, a longer visit with scleral, custom soft, gas permeable, and hybrid lenses.

Who fits contact lenses at Aker Eye, and where?

All four of our doctors, at both Titusville offices. Dr. Greg Aker and Dr. Amanda Aker fit them Downtown, 338 S Washington Ave, second floor by the elevator. Dr. Sarah Koehnemann and Dr. Jennifer Bradley fit them at Playalinda, 1114 S Washington Ave. Contact lenses were Dr. Greg Aker's focus in optometry school, and he has fitted them in Titusville for more than 40 years.

For a child or teenager, ask for Dr. Bradley, whose residency was in pediatrics and binocular vision. If your contacts dry your eyes out, Dr. Greg Aker and Dr. Amanda Aker treat dry eye Downtown and can look at the lens and the eye together.

How much does a contact lens exam cost, and does insurance cover it?

The fitting is a separate fee on top of the eye exam, and the amount depends on the lens: a standard soft lens fitting costs less than a specialty fitting. Many vision plans pay part of the fitting and give you an allowance toward lenses. We check your benefits before your visit, so you hear the number before you sit down, not after.
